'From the Bush To the Pridelands' is the first release on the Vocaphone record label. This new label intends to release music of quality with the focus being unashamedly on musicality and artistry without the constraints of commercialism. The composition on this recording was based around trying to capture a particular mood or emotion ,and this took precedence over the conventional concerns of song structure. Soundscapes,( or tone-poems I believe they have been called), are frequently used to paint pictures of emotions with sound. The overall influence of the now general acceptance of music from disparate cultures is present here and structures are built with a modal approach. This is very reminiscent of the classical Indian style or 'Raga' where melody is based upon a particular scale and no form of western harmony is used. The traditional drumkit is supplemented with Congas, Bongoes,Djembe,Tabla,Darbuka and many other exotic percussion instruments. The sitar is featured extensively along with traditional acoustic and electric guitars. Rather than try to interpret the music from other cultures , here we have the beautiful sounds created by those instruments, but used to create something new.

| If pushed to place this music in a category I feel that the genre that has become known as 'World' music would be the closest match. It is unfortunate that we have to have labels within an art form, but many listeners are wary of steps into unknown territory. The world music scene is one of the most creative areas for the production of new music at the moment. Classical ethnic music is now finding a wider audience along with the more contemporary uses of the individual music of differing cultures. | ||||||||||
