Without exception, the saxophone mouthpiece is the cause of the most despair in saxophonists. The eternal search is always on for a mouthpiece that can combine the dream tone that the musician can hear in his head with a liquid playability that will enhance his dexterity. The reality of this situation is that most players , whilst striving for this Utopian situation, end up with a room full of mouthpieces that have cost them a small fortune; none of which can completely satisfy their needs.
The Bari Rubber Mouthpiece
The Mouthpiece is in itself, not entirely responsible for producing the sound that emerges from the end of the horn. It is a combination of the mouthpiece, the reed (the vibrating part) and the ligature (the means by which the reed is attached to the mouthpiece). Any number of combinations of strength of reed, tip opening or chamber size can collude to completely frustrate the aural voyager.
The Bobby Dukoff has become a very popular mouthpiece with modern players who need a bright, responsive, sometimes aggressive tone. It is ideal(some might say essential) for playing in loud, amplified gig situations.
The Hawk II by Bari is similar to the Dukoff but with a little more subtlety. It has a detachable tone ring which can alter the sound for different approaches.
The Lawton is another well made full- toned Mouthpiece with its own adjustable ligature.
The Selmer S80 series ebonite mouthpieces are very popular and produce a very clean ,pure, classical sound. They have recently introduced a 'Super session' series of ebonite mouthpieces with wider lays for a warmer sound.
The Selmer Jazz and Classical Metal mouthpieces have an edgy, dark tone very reminiscent of the 60's Jazz era.
If you are still having problems finding the right mouthpiece it is now possible to have a bespoke mouthpiece made to your own specifications. Freddie Gregory will make a piece to your spec and personally tailor it until you are happy..This service does not come cheap but for the satisfaction of reaching the holy grail what wouldn't you pay?
The Otto link is probably the most famous of all saxophone mouthpieces due to its association with just about every significant player in the history of contemporary music.
